Jamie was standing in the presence of a beautiful plane. She hopped in and found her way through all four safety straps to get firmly in her seat. Once Peter made sure she was in securely, he grabbed the wing of the plane and pulled it out of the hangar and postioned it towards the runway. He hopped in and quickly threw his seatbelts on. He turned on the engine and gave Jamie some headphones so they could talk over the loud engine. Finally, when all was ready, they took off.
Within 10 seconds of take-off, Jamie could see the Sears Tower poking out of the Chicago skyline. That itself was amazing to her. They climbed and climbed threw the air. Eventually, Jamie was able to talk again.
"I can see my house from here," she said. Peter then took the plane towards Jamie's old middle school. She was amazed at then. Then, Jamie led Peter to her high school and took a picture of it from above. It was a big building. After a long silence, they reached the middle of nowhere.
"You want to steer?" Peter asked. Jamie was amazed.
"Sure!" She reached for the stick in front of her. "It's like a video game" she thought to herself. Peter explained the controls to her and off she went.
"Ok, how about you turn to face South. She turned around, but made it South west. They both laughed. After about 10 minutes of aimless aviation, Jamie told Peter he could take control again. He did, and saw the sun starting to set.
"I'm thinking it's time we headed back home," Peter said. Sad face for Jamie.
They landed back at the airport, Jamie asked Peter if the plane had a name.
"Like Betsie or something?"
"Yeah"
"No...you wanna name her?" he asked. Jamie was stunned.
"Cherry bomb!"
"Cherry bomb? I kinda like it....cherry bomb..." It was official. Cherry Bomb was now this plane's name. Jamie was excited to go flying again all because the named the plane...and flying was amazing.
"Yeah, flying can be an addicting habit...and an expensive one, too." Time to start on that pilot's license, though.
The rest of the night, Jamie had "Airplanes" by B.o.B. stuck in her head--the song of the week when she had been at Notre Dame.
